Happy New Year 2009

[Dalam Dwibahasa] I wish to take this opportunity to wish everyone Happy New Year 2009. May the New Year see our continued resolve to bring change for the better for our children, our nation and ourselves. That from this resolve will flow efforts and through these efforts, may GOD grant us success. May this success be not only in this world but also in the hereafter. KT Bye-Election - Keeping the Agenda of Change Alive

[Dalam Dwibahasa] It goes without saying, the KT bye-election is a very important bye-election for PAS, PR and also the BN. For the BN, they are very eager to prove that their downward spiral stops here! With the promise of change at the top leadership level, plus the passing of two so-called ‘landmark’ motions, they want to prove that the Rakyat are now ready and willing to give the BN their full support as in the past. This bye-election is therefore the acid test for the steps taken thus far by the BN in its attempt to reverse the political trend so apparent since the 12th general elections in March. The Permatang Pauh bye-election showed an increase in the support for the opposition as the majority for PR was increased. It is desperately hoped, by the BN, that for KT, they will be able to defend this seat and win with a convincing majority. With that, it will be shown that Permatang Pauh was an exception and not the rule. For PR this is yet another opportunity to prove the dwindling

Video: Temuramah RTM Isu Hudud

-Pejabat YB Khalid Samad-

The Issue of Hudud Laws

[Dalam Dwibahasa] Once again, like clockwork , just before a bye-election to be contested by a PAS candidate, the issue of Hudud laws takes centre stage. I personally did not follow Husam’s debate with Khairy but I was told that Husam, in response to Khairy’s statement responded by saying that if given control over the federal government, Hudud laws would be implemented! I asked Husam, did he say ‘PAS’ would implement Hudud if given power at the Federal Government or ‘PR’? Husam said he said ‘PAS’. OK. If he said PAS, I contemplated, that meant that he was referring to a time in the future, distant or otherwise, when PAS, on its own, has managed to convince the Malaysian electorate of the correctness and effectiveness of the Islamic system as a whole, including the Hudud laws and wins the elections on this basis. In other words, PAS wins the elections on an Islamic agenda. That did not sound too bad. In such a situation, it is obvious, that PAS will implement the Hudud laws as that is

Video Parliemen: Perbahasan Rang Undang-Undang Suruhanjaya Perlantikan Kehakiman

-Pejabat YB Khalid Samad-

A Matter of Respect

theSun: Why do you think the practice of name-calling and usage of unparliamentary words in the Dewan Rakyat has become a culture that is acceptable now? Khalid : All the unparliamentary words, name-calling and the like should not have happened. And in most cases, we see the same people doing it. One or two Pakatan Rakyat MPs do this but this is not something we condone or encourage. Perhaps it happens because the situation in Parliament now is more tense with a larger number of opposition (MPs). Earlier the voice of the Opposition was not too obvious. But now with more opposition MPs, the issues raised are seen to be more challenging. So, the bigger number of opposition MPs contributes to this culture? It should not be a contributory factor but maybe the BN MPs are not used to this kind of environment, they find it intimidating. So when they feel intimidated they are not able to present their arguments rationally. Then, they try to give a bad image to the Opposition by using tactics t

Video Parlimen: AUKU (Bhg. 2)

Video Parlimen: AUKU (Bhg. 1)

The Medina Charter (Part 2)

First, I would like thank Aloysious for his speedy response given to my earlier post: The Medina Charter as a Basis of Nation Building . I apologise for the fact that I am unable to respond as quickly due to other commitments. Secondly, I would like to say that I have read the text of the Charter, all be it about 16 years ago. I think it is a little presumptuous on the part of Aloysious to conclude that I have yet to read it; although I do admit that I did depend on memory when responding to his article. Thirdly, I do not think that we are encumbered by ‘the weight of the Muslim past’ as Aloysious puts it. Rather we find much to be proud of and many lessons which are still very relevant to our needs. In responding to Aloysious’s article, I made the assumption that the tribes mentioned were polytheists and not Jews. This, Aloysious has stated as being incorrect and I stand corrected. The reason why I assumed they were polytheists was because I know for a fact that when The Holy Prophet

The Nut Graph Interview (Part 2)

By Shanon Shah shanonshah@thenutgraph.com "...Khalid Samad: As far as non-Muslims are concerned, it shouldn't be of any real interest to them. This is like [when] Muslims [say], “Look, my religion says I have to pray five times (a day).” You can argue, why five times, why not once, but it's not really relevant to them. [For] the Muslims themselves, or for the non-Muslims who have an understanding of Islamic jurisprudence, and they want to argue on the basis of Islamic teachings that this fatwa contradicts Islamic teachings, they can do so. But for them to say, oh Islam is not fair, Islam is sexist, or Islam is gender biased, all that sort of thing, I don't think that's the way to go. TNG: You mentioned enforcement. Do you think that it's proper that the Syariah Criminal Offences Act turns non-compliance of personal religious obligations, such as prayer, fasting, and consumption of halal food, into actual crimes that are punishable by the state? Khalid Samad: I

The Samad Brothers

By U-En Ng (Sketchwriter,Malay Mail) "...Khalid Abdul Samad (Pas-Shah Alam) looks nothing like him. Shahrir, of average height, prefers simple suits which he often leaves unbuttoned. He has a tendency to stoop and seems constantly to overwork himself—his Ministry is not the easiest portfolio—and one occasionally passes him in the Lobby with the impression that he hasn't slept since March. Khalid on the other hand is almost disturbingly tall, has the confident stride of a rugby player and the easy smile of a double-O agent. He cuts a dashing figure in his black waistcoat, but sometimes spoils the effect with the Bluetooth gadget that until recently appeared welded permanently to his ear. His words, like his brother's, are taken seriously by the House, though he does enjoy baiting some of the more hot-tempered Members on the other side—whereas his brother always does his best to take even the most idiotic question seriously. When in a more sombre mood, however, Khalid is, l

The Nut Graph Interview (Part 1)

By Shanon Shah shanonshah@thenutgraph.com "...In the first part of this exclusive interview with The Nut Graph, Khalid reflects on PAS' dynamics and future, responds to PKR's Zulkifli, and talks about being an Umno politician's younger brother. TNG: The New Straits Times reported on 24 Nov that you have been axed as deputy commissioner II for Selangor PAS. Do you see this as an attempt within PAS to sideline more progressive voices? How far is it true that PAS is now divided between the conservatives and the progressives or the “kumpulan Erdogan”? Khalid Samad: ( Chuckles ) Well, in Selangor, the chief is (Datuk Dr) Hassan Ali. I don't think you would be able to classify him as a conservative. He's not a graduate of a pondok or Islamic school or university or whatever. There are three deputy commissioners, I am deputy number two. It was decided in a meeting where I also attended that it would be better if I give up that post and let somebody else take it who w

Jed Yong: Interview With Khalid Samad

From Jed Yong's blog The fact that Khalid Samad was dropped from the Selangor committee last week did not seem to faze the tall, eloquent politician, whose brother is an UMNO Minister, Sharir Samad. As he gently cuts his salmon steak with a knife before prodding it with a fork at the Petaling Jaya Hilton coffee house this afternoon, the Shah Alam Member of Parliament and Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) Central Committee member was a picture of a sophisticated urbanite, quite contrary to the party’s image of a rural, communal and apocalyptic party. Fitted in a suit complete with a vest, he could be any of the many successful professionals lunching al fresco at the Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC). And he was too before his foray into politics in 1983. After completing his studies in Fuel and Energy at Brighton University and then Leeds University in the United Kingdom (UK) in the 70s, he was among the first few government scholars who returned in 1979 to serve in the newly formed na
